How to Get Around

Taiwan’s transportation system is fast, reliable, and traveler-friendly — whether you’re hopping between cities or exploring neighborhoods. Here’s how to get around with ease:

🚄 High-Speed Rail (HSR)

The Taiwan High Speed Rail connects the west coast from Taipei all the way down to Kaohsiung. It’s the fastest way to travel long distances and offers a smooth, comfortable ride.

  • Main stops: Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung (Zuoying)

  • Tip: Book online in advance for discounts, especially during holidays

  • Website: thsrc.com.tw

🚉 Trains (TRA)

Taiwan Railways (TRA) covers more destinations than the HSR, including scenic east coast routes and small towns.

  • Great for reaching Hualien, Taitung, and smaller cities

  • Choose from local, express, and scenic trains

  • English ticket machines are available at major stations

🚇 MRT Systems

Taipei and Kaohsiung both have excellent metro systems that are clean, safe, and easy to navigate.

  • Taipei MRT: Covers most tourist areas, runs from 6 am to midnight

  • Kaohsiung MRT: Smaller but useful for getting around the city center

  • Fares are affordable and can be paid using EasyCard

🚌 Buses

Long-distance buses are comfy and cheaper than trains. In cities, local buses are a great option too.

  • Intercity buses: UBus, Kuo-Kuang, Ho-Hsin — most run between major cities and airports

  • City buses: Use an EasyCard for quick tap-and-go boarding

  • Bus stops often have real-time arrival info in English

🚖 Taxis & Rideshares

Taxis are everywhere and relatively affordable. Most drivers don’t speak English, so have your destination written in Chinese or use a map.

  • No haggling — fares are metered

  • Uber is available in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung

🚲 Biking

Taiwan is bike-friendly, especially in cities like Taipei and Tainan. Look out for YouBike stations.

  • Easy rental with an EasyCard or credit card

  • Great for riverside paths and neighborhood exploring

💡 WRUGoing tip: Grab an EasyCard at the airport or MRT station. It works on almost all public transport and even some convenience stores — plus, it’ll save you money and time.
